Research

At first, I started with a heuristic analysis of the current product to understand it in more depth.

LITERATURE REVIEW

"Exposure to screen-based media is almost universal in urban Indian toddlers 15-18 months of age, starting
as early as by 2 months of age.

Majority of the parents were not concerned about the screen time of their children."

-Meena, P., Gupta, P. and Shah, D. (2020) ‘Screen Time in Indian children by 15–18 months of age’, Indian Pediatrics, 57(11)

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

"The average age of screen viewing
has fallen over the past decades from 3 to 5 years to 12–18 months.

Indian parents are nurturing screen
addiction in toddlers’ parents who provide smartphone or digital gadgets to toddlers while feeding them. This habit can not only make them sedentary also push them in digital addiction, childhood obesity leads to high cholesterol."

Conclusions

Parents find the limited use of phone beneficial for the kid’s development

Parents have observed that listening to rhymes and poems on the internet has helped them in developing their speech faster. They find it easy to control the content their child is exposed in Youtube Kids. Even though there are studies that clearly show that children under five should not have more than 1hr of screen time, parents are unaware of it. They treat their toddlers like teenagers.

Even under the watchful eyes of parents, toddlers are being exposed to content that is above their age group

It was observed that even when parents are soo careful with their toddler they are watching thing like make-up videos or even horror stories.

What seems like faster mental development might be harmful in hindsight

Faster emotional development in kids might make parents happy and look at it as a seemingly healthy thing, but might expose kids to the darker sides of the psyche which is an inevitable side effect of maturity

Toddlers are binge watching as compared to having a fixed schedule for their favourite show

On Televisions, we have a specific time when our favorite show comes on while on YouTube kids, you can watch your favourite content creator’s as much as we want, there is no limit to content.

The sample set of parents we interviewed was highly educated, financially secure

The parents interviewed had the ability to understand the importance of playing outside, restricting screen time and had the resources to make sure these were being maintained

Solution

IDEATION

We set a timer and started jotting down ideas - not eliminating anything, just putting down whatever came to our mind

Guidelines

Once we were satisfied we combined and found our ideations could be grouped under 3 main categories

MENTAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Emerging technologies should be used to be able to monitor the child’s development at different phases of their growth

  • Whatever platform the child interacts with should make them interact with their surrounding environment

RESTRICT BINGING

  • Limit the content accessible to kids in a (day/week) particular time frame

  • Help parents interact with the kids more so as to develop better parent child relationship

AGE APPROPRIATION

  • Labeling and categorizing content age wise should be stricter, AI can be used for the process

  • Penalization of channels showing content that is not recommend for toddlers

Redesigned screens of YouTube Kids implementing these guidelines will be posted soon
